Conscious Consumption Advice From The CEO of A Sustainable New York Fashion Brand

We know firsthand that it can be hard to stay grounded when you’re expecting during holidays—from added expenses, to social and family commitments, and meeting deadlines of all kinds—that can certainly rock an expectant mother’s nervous system. And, as we are in business of responsible gifting, we often reflect on how to help families ensure they are spending time and money in the most meaningful ways, while maintaining their well-being and that of the planet. With all of that in mind, we called on Elle Wang, founder and CEO of sustainable maternity brand and curated lifestyle shop, Emilia George® to share her perspective on the topic. With a commitment to high-quality goods and ethical practices—and her brand being inspired by Elle’s own entry to motherhood—we knew she would have just the advice to inspire us all. Read on for what Elle had to say about slowing down, conscious consumption, mindful maternity shopping and more.

As a busy city mom and business owner, what are your favorite rituals or self-care practices that help you slow down and relax?

    EW

If being a mom and business owner has taught me one thing, it is the power of self-care. As we all know, mornings as a mom are not easy—between getting myself ready for the day and getting the kids ready for school, it is a whirlwind of activity. So my first moment of self-care is the thirty minutes of quiet time I get after drop-off every day. I’ve found that taking some time to myself before my busy workday has helped me get the day started on the right foot. I also try to make time weekly for some physical activity—outside of chasing behind two boys during bedtime. My private Pilates class at Forma Pilates has been a core ritual for me. Taking the time to engage my body in a private space without the pressure of competition or comparison in a larger group has become one of my favorite parts of my week. Plus, I get to invite a dear mom friend to join me for free once in a while.

At Little Honey Money, we’re big proponents of conscious consumption. How would you say that’s meaningful in your personal life?

    EW

In this era of digital fast-fashion brands that offer five dollars for an outfit, we risk losing touch with how our consumption affects the world. My motto when it comes to shopping is “Every piece of clothing should be worn”. My favorite items in my home are those I’ve had for over ten years that have stayed in excellent condition. I also strive to purchase things that will either maintain or increase in value and will stand the test of time with excellent quality. This value is also something that I try to instill in my boys. Being conscious of the importance of a good quality hand-me-down and the impact that it has on the environment is so significant, especially with kids’ items. I try to show my kids the tremendous impact that something as small as sharing toys can have on the environment.

Are there any mindful, mother-centric, or self-care gift items currently on your radar?

    EW

Anything geared to at-home relaxation is always on my radar. As a busy mom, I don’t always have the luxury of going out to do things that I usually would, so finding something like an at-home massage or an at-home mani/pedi service is great. These smaller “concierge” type services are things that I think all moms could benefit from, especially during the holiday season when we’re also dealing with things like gift shopping or family trip planning.

What is the most meaningful gift you have received since becoming a mother?

    EW

For my first Mother’s Day, my mother and I gifted each other a piece of jewelry, intending to create a family heirloom for my children. It was such a special moment because it was a gift from her celebrating me as a new mother, and also a gift from me to her thanking her for being there for me in my motherhood journey.

Expecting a baby can often create a sense of urgency around stocking a nursery. Any advice for first-time mothers to calm anxieties around this?

    EW

During this time, there can be a ton of people giving you advice, especially around the time of your baby shower. The best advice I can give is to trust your gut. Find one or two mom friends that you trust and allow them to offer their insights on what you should consider for your nursery. You should also accept that you will miss some things, but remember that even after your little one is born, everything is just as accessible. When I started my motherhood journey, the best thing that someone told me was that there’s no such thing as a perfectly stocked nursery, as everyone’s needs will be a little different.

What’s your favorite piece of advice to give clients who are maternity shopping for the first time?

    EW

Buy less, but buy better. I think there is a misconception that this is a time when you need to sacrifice quality or style for functionality, but you can certainly have the best of both worlds. This is one of the values that we strive to provide at Emilia George—creating pieces that not only are functional and comfortable but allow women to keep their sense of style. I suggest to all of our customers to go shopping with a non-pregnant friend, someone you trust, to give their opinions on styles that fit the “you” before pregnancy.

What is one of your favorite ethical brands for maternity wear?

    EW

One of my favorite ethical brands that is not necessarily a maternity label but has clothing that can support a growing bump is Mara Hoffman. Their highly curated designs, carefully selected fabrics, and sustainable production efforts are the hallmarks of an ethical brand. Mara Hoffman and Emilia George are also members of the United Nations Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle network.

What are some things you do to stay grounded during holiday seasons?

    EW

As hectic as it may be, I genuinely cherish any time I can spend with my family. We are committed to taking holiday vacations as a family. Kids grow so fast, so I try to spend as much time creating early childhood memories with them before they’re too old to hang out with Mom. I also try to take this time to unplug as a CEO and founder. Giving this time to myself has become vital in keeping my sanity. I also try to extend this to our team as well. Closing our corporate office and store during the last week of December allows us to unplug and spend time with our loved ones.
